Corneal Transplants

Cornea Transplant ExampleComplications associated with corneal transplants (PK & DSEK) include, but are not limited to, infection, bleeding, cataract formation, glaucoma, detachment or swelling of the retina and graft rejection or failure. Most of these conditions are treatable, and you will be closely monitored after surgery for them. In some cases, corneal transplants may be rejected. Rejections occur about 5 to 30 percent of the time. If this happens, the cornea will cloud and vision will worsen. However, a second corneal transplant procedure can be performed. Unfortunately, the rejection rate increases for repeat corneal transplants.

Symptoms of corneal rejection include constant discomfort, sensitivity to light, redness, and change in vision. It is important for patients to report these symptoms immediately to our office at (916) 649-1515.
