Farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia are classified as refractive errors in one’s eyesight. Ophthalmologists usually recommend refractive cataract surgery to correct any of these errors. They even suggest that you get Acrysof PanOptix IOLs for this restorative eye treatment. If you are considering this procedure, it is a good idea to find out what usually happens when you get refractive cataract surgery.

Before the Procedure

About one to two weeks before your surgical procedure, your physician will subject you to a series of tests that will measure the shape and size of your affected eye. This is necessary so that the artificial lens best suited for you can be selected. Your doctor may recommend Acrysof PanOptix IOLs because it will help you gain clear eyesight for short (40 centimeters away), intermediate (60 centimeters away), and long distances.

Your doctor will also remind you not to drink or eat anything 12 hours prior to your surgery. You should arrange for someone to drive you straight home because you won’t have to stay in the hospital overnight.

During the Procedure

Expect to be awake as the surgery transpires. Your doctor will anesthetize your affected eye so you will not feel any pain or discomfort. You may also be given a sedative. This type of surgery usually lasts almost an hour. The front of your eye will be incised carefully. Sometimes, a laser is used for this part. Your physician will then use a minute tool to break your cataract up and suction it out gently.

Next, your doctor will place the Acrysof PanOptix IOL in the space occupied by your old lens. When the Acrysof PanOptix IOL is in place, your physician will seal the cut. In case both your eyes have cataracts, it’s highly likely you’ll have two procedures done separately. They will be three weeks apart so that the other eye will be able to heal first.

After the Procedure

About three days after the refractive cataract surgery, your affected eye may ache or itch. Some tearing might be present, so you may find it difficult to see when there’s a bright light. Your physician will prescribe eye drops to keep away infection. Rest and relax for the next several days. Remember that you should not bend over, drive, lift heavy things, or subject your eye to pressure.

Your doctor will tell you to wear an eye patch or eye shield as you sleep during the first week. This will keep your affected eye safe as it heals. In case you notice that your eye is not healing optimally, or you feel pain, inform your physician immediately. After two months, your eye should be healed completely. According to a survey, almost 90 percent of cataract patients gain an improved vision after their procedure. Your eye surgeon believes that with Acrysof PanOptix IOLs, it is highly likely that you will reduce or even check off your need to wear glasses after your cataract surgery.
