About Laser Vision Correction

Seeking All-Laser LASIK in Sacramento?
Read below to get a thorough understanding of LASIK eye surgery

Laser In Situ Keratomileusis, more commonly known as LASIK, is a solution for many patients that want to achieve clearer vision without glasses or contacts. LASIK originated in the 1960s and has since evolved to become one of the most popular and effective vision correction procedures available today, treating nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In the near future, we will be able to correct presbyopia as well.

During the LASIK eye surgery procedure at our Sacramento practice, patients remain awake with only the designated eye anesthetized with drops. To begin the procedure, a corneal flap is created. The VISX S4 IR excimer laser is then used to remove precise amounts of tissue from the central cornea, located beneath the corneal flap. During this step, nearsighted patients will have central tissue removed to flatten the cornea, farsighted individuals will have the tissue removed in a donut-like pattern to steepen the cornea, and selected tissue will be removed to even out the curvature of the cornea for patients with astigmatism.

Once the correction is made, the corneal flap will be returned to its original position and the eye will begin healing naturally without stitches. It is common for patients to see clearly right after surgery, however, we ask that you not drive yourself home. Typically, the day after the procedure, patients return to work or school following their appointment with the doctor. Eye drops will be prescribed and should be used for one week and protective eye shields should be worn while sleeping for the first few nights.

Are you a candidate?

What are the steps to LASER Vision correction? (LASIK eye surgery) If you are seeking LASIK in Sacramento please feel free to call us immediately so we can start you on the STEPS to better vision.

Determining LASIK Candidacy - STEP 1

Not every individual is a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. Each individual person has extremely unique eyes. No two cornea maps are the same just like with a Fingerprint or DNA sample. Before determining your LASIK candidacy, a pre-operative evaluation will be required. You can set this up directly with one of our LASIK counselors. If you want to take our LASIK self-evaluation test this will notify us of any warning signs and connect you immediately to a LASIK counselor. The pre-operative exam is absolutely necessary and will be the ultimate determining factor for your candidacy.

PRE-Operative Exam - STEP 2

This thorough diagnostic evaluation is the first clinical step in creating a positive outcome for your best possible visual outcome or personal best vision. After a series of eye health tests and corneal measurements, the doctor will have a good idea as to whether or not you are a LASIK candidate. Please consult our LASIK counselors to determine how long you will need to be out of contact lenses prior to this visit.

Scheduling Surgery - STEP 3

Once it has been determined that you are a candidate you will be ready to schedule surgery. Make sure to schedule surgery on a day where you can have plenty of rest and downtime the following day. You will need to arrange for a ride home from the surgery with a family member or friend. After your surgery, the doctors will provide post-operative instructions and give you some eye drops to help the healing process.

Creating Reasonable Expectations

Your decision to have LASIK laser vision correction is a serious decision. Ultimately, you will be the one to make the final decision. When selecting a LASIK surgeon, it is important to select a surgeon who can honestly explain your visual needs. In 98% of LASIK cases, the visual outcome is 20/40 or better, however, this is a surgical procedure and there is a potential risk. This is why selecting a surgeon with a vast amount of experience is important. The ultimate goal of LASIK is to reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. LASIK does not always create perfect 20/20 vision, though most cases are successful in improving vision. Ask the right questions before selecting your eye surgeon. Make sure that your surgeon of choice has the right answers, the best technology, and the experience under his or her belt to ensure a safe and effective procedure. It is possible that this is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make. These are your eyes and your life.

LASIK Facts:

Because LASIK eye surgery is such a new and revolutionary procedure there are sometimes misconceptions. Listed below are some facts for interested LASIK patients to review.

  • LASIK is eye surgery to a very sensitive and delicate part of the eye, the cornea.

  • Millions of people have had LASIK, most very successfully.

  • This is surgery. There are potential risks and possible LASIK related complications. Please feel free to do alternative research on the associated risks with this type of LASIK eye surgery. Many LASIK chains like to claim this is a procedure. Do not be confused. LASIK is surgery and requires a specialized ophthalmologist to adequately perform the surgery.

  • LASIK may not give you complete perfect vision. Check your expectations. Most people notice their arm is not long enough between ages 40-50. This is no different following LASIK. You will likely require reading glasses, just like those people who did not have the procedure.

  • LASIK surgery cannot be reversed.

  • The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reports that seven out of 10 patients achieve 20/20 vision, but 20/20 does not always mean perfect vision.
