Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery Sacramento – The Surgeons at Sacramento Eye Consultants

Cataract eye surgery is a delicate procedure that requires the expertise of an experienced cataract surgeon. At our Sacramento practice, Drs. Grutzmacher, Lewis, Sierra and Brubaker can help patients suffering from cataracts regain clear vision.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The lens is responsible for focusing light on the retina. However, when the lens is cloudy, light cannot easily pass through and the image becomes blurry. If cataracts progress, blindness can result.

Cataracts typically develop with age, but can also be caused by genetics, eye injuries, diseases, or medications. Individuals with mild cataracts may benefit from a new prescription. However, if the condition progresses, cataract surgery should be considered for permanent removal

Cataract eye surgery is often performed on an outpatient basis. If the procedure is scheduled early in the morning, patients may be asked to skip breakfast. Before surgery, the cataract surgeon will administer eye drops and medication to help the patient relax. A local anesthetic will also be given to make the procedure painless.

During surgery an instrument will be used to hold the eye open. Patients may be able to see light and movement during the procedure, but everything will appear very blurry. The cataract is then removed and the intraocular lens inserted. To complete the procedure, a protective shield is typically placed over the eye. Patients should plan to have someone else drive them home after surgery, as their eye will need time to rest and heal.

Contact Sacramento Eye Consultants to find out if you are a candidate for cataract eye surgery. Each cataract surgeon at our Sacramento practice has extensive experience in cataract removal and the placement of intraocular lenses and can help you regain clear vision.

About Cataract Lens Implants

During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of your eye is removed and replaced with a clear man made lens implant. In older times, there were no implants, and patients had to wear thick glasses (“Coke-bottle glasses”) after surgery just to see Implants are now placed directly into the eye, reducing or eliminating the need for any glasses after surgery. The latest implants, called premium lens implants, toric implants, and presbyopia-correcting implants, can even provide sharp vision at both distance and up close, reducing or eliminating the need for any kind of glasses, including reading glasses, after surgery.
